The local and traditional vegetable pie is most delicious, but anything but dangerous. Around its origin and its name «Cholera » numerous stories are told. One explanation sais that the pie came from the time when the cholera raged in the Valais and the trade and the exchange of food was forbidden. The hearty pie was prepared from what the rural household offered: flour, onions, leeks, apples, potatoes and cheese. Another theorie might be a kinship with coal, in dialect «Chola» or «Cholu». The pan with the cholera was put into the coal for baking. In fact, «Cholära» is also a term for the open anteroom in the bakehouse, where the coals of the oven were collected in a pit.
