Visit me down below and you will have a beautiful view of the valley. Scoot over to other areas and you will find me in the brightest light. It is so nice to meet you. I am called Oberwald, although I was formerly known as Superiore Valde (1386). Once you cross the passes of Furka Tunnel, I am the first village you will see in Goms. Just like the Rotten (Rhône) quiets down shortly after falling down from the Rhône Glacier, you will find your calm once you arrive in Oberwald. In addition to my village centre, you will also be amazed at Unterwassern, Gletsch and the abandoned hamlets in Gerental. My situation provides an excellent panorama view of Goms and access to the nature paradise that is the foreland of the Rhône Glacier. Another unique experience is the ride on the Furka Dampfbahn (steam train) over the Furka Pass. In 1850, residents in Oberwald started to make history as pioneers in alpine tourism: The Grand Hotel Glacier du Rhône in Gletsch and the Belvédère near the Furkapass are reminders of that tradition.
