Parish Church of St. Cross

The two communities of Oberwald and Unterwassern agreed on the location of the church between the villages at the end of the 17th century. As a pilgrimage church, it was built somewhat away from the settlement. The blessing of the church and the three altars was in 1736. An avalanche damaged the tower roof and the sacristy in 1720. At that time
The avalanche-breaking wedge, which is characteristic for the church, was added behind the front of the choir. Its shape was changed over the centuries. During the flood of 1834, so much debris surrounded the building that one had to descend to the church door, whereas steps used to lead up to it.
